Educate!

Educate! tackles youth unemployment by partnering with schools and governments in East Africa to reform what schools teach and how they teach it.  Their program aims to help young people aquire the skills to attain further education, overcome gender inequities, start businesses, get jobs, and drive development in their communities.

Hey-Yo was tasked with creating a video to help explain the impact of the Educate! program after they took part in a rigorous 4-year Randomized Control Trial evaluation. The intial design approach was focused on minimlastic text and shapes, to highlight the journalistic and fact-driven nature of the study.  But after some careful consideration, we decided we should balance out the serious tone of the material with bright visuals, playful textures and charming animation.  Because at the end of the day, no matter the results, we're all trying our best to make the world a little brighter.

Texture Time

Before we could jump into storyboarding, we had to build out a library of textures, patterns and doodles that we could use throughout the project as backgrounds, overlays and graphic objects.  We looked to East African textiles, ceramics, paintings and landscapes to help us achieve an authentic and purposeful art direction.  A couple hours later in Procreate, we had a nice selection to work with.
